Canyon Gaining Momentum

There is so much momentum going on at Canyon right now that sometimes I have to pinch myself to believe that this is actually happening! I am getting women that have never been athletes their entire lives to do handstand holds! The move to program with levels was huge. This has encouraged hard work ethic to progress. Goals are being set and people are making gains.

Last Saturday we hosted a Friends and Family day. Despite the weather, we had a great turnout! There was a moment during that morning that gave me goosebumps. I didn't ask anyone to help me, it was a natural instinct for our veteran clients to help. They were encouraging and helping keeping an eye out for improper form and range of motion. At that particular moment, I knew from now on things were going to change. Later that day I went to the drawing board.

Two things on my mind:

How do I continue the momentum we first had with the Performance Nutrition Experience? New clients are interested, I can probably say almost 30 more people want to do it. But deep inside me I know that it will not be the same unless I engage them with our current PNE participants.

Most of the PNE contestants have been a part of the Canyon Family for a while. I believe it is time to offer my knowledge. It is time to run classes with "assistants." I am thinking of hosting classes or seminars for our current clients that are interested in helping out. Crossfit methodology is important, coaching tips will be helpful for them. If I can give in return a good preparation for  a certification, I would like to see some people help me with sessions. I believe for anyone who truly values what Crossfit is all about should get certified. The more knowledge the better for the community. Crossfit is not even 10 years old yet and it is kicking ass! When I first started Crossfit, I had this feeling in my gut that this is going to change. This is something big. I felt that Crossfit was groundbreaking and well on its way to change the world of fitness forever. At the same time I doubted myself because NOBODY knew what Crossfit was. Every time I mentioned it to someone there was little or no interest at all. It was something I kept to myself, believing in the opportunities.

In order for Canyon to grow it needs the help of the community. Soon I see us hiring our very own clients as trainers (its impacts peoples lives that much). The more nutritional encouragement and awareness of proper movement at Canyon, the more it will be recognized, the fitter the people will get, more lives will be changed.

I think because of the use of social media, Crossfit is going to be one of the very first "movements" on how businesses change to building relationships with their customers. But this isn't something new. This is old school business. This is how business used to run. Back when small towns worked on building relationships. Word of mouth was powerful. It was an era when businesses could stay in family hands for several generations. Business owners took pride in what they did. With today's technology, we don't take word for a published magazine for the best Chinese restaurant in the county (probably paid into getting published and rated), we look at what our friends are posting online, the honest reviews that are being posted; and those businesses understand that, the ones that will survive vs the ones that will not.

I am not saying this is death to Globo Gym, I am saying that they better do something because small boxes are killing it. And they will do something about it, perhaps you will see more "functional" equipment vs machines. Maybe they will even copy a training regimen. But they will never suceed because they need to build a community from the ground. They need to know who everyone is and what they do for a living. More importantly, they have to care about their clients more so than their ROI. And if the CEO of Gold's Gym doesn't care about that, all what he or she cares about is maintaining profits, then they will be doomed.

My Experience out of My Lifestyle

For five years now I have been working part time at Trinity Broadcasting Network. TBN is the largest religious television network cable organization in the world. The data entry studios is in Tustin, CA. You may have scrolled through your tv and caught a glimpse of people preaching in front of an audience. You can't miss Jane Crouch, she sticks out like a clown being spotted at a baptism. Her hair is pink; I'm talking about bright pink, my little pony pink and probably used a whole case of Aquanet to keep that hair up. I do many different things for TBN. I work primarily during the telethons.

TBN host telethons bi-annually. One in the fall and one in the spring. Each telethon will host a week of live shows of well known Christan preachers and pastors. They have a large following all over the globe. They will host a re-run week during the second week of the telethon. In 2011, TBN collected 824 million dollars of pledges, in essentially 4 weeks.

I work here because I am intrigued with how this place is run. All money collected is tax free. The people that work here are die hard fans of TBN and would do their jobs for free. I still work here because of something different. I am here to study the workforce, to study the administration and compare it to other organizations. You see, TBN is a cult. The people here are the nicest people I have ever met. Some people have been working here for over 20 years!

What I have been noticing today is the heavy breathing all around me. Everyone here is overweight. Right now I am hearing conversations about managing their diabetes. Taking about when is it ok to eat cookies. I see people walking like they have been wounded. They are not even aware about this. People are not aware that their weight is causing major health problems. In the break room there are doughnuts, boxes of sweet n low for their coffee and a lot of fast food for their meals. A lady is making a KILLING right now selling her girl scout cookies for her daughter. I see bean dip being consumed by the spoonful. Everyone is anxious and desperate to have their 15 minute break to eat.

I forgot about life outside of my very own lifestyle. So this is what our society currently looks like. I am starting to think that the statistics today on obesity and diabetes do not do its justice. As I sit here enjoying my raw bell pepper, I feel sick to my stomach to understand that these people are oblivious that they are taking years away from their lives. They have lost hope and accepted their toxic state of being.

How Ironic is it that everyone is praying for their health. They are praying to God to help with their sickness. The majority of prayer request I get on the phone lines are related to health. Cancer, heart surgery, diabetes. People are pledging their money, in some cases everything they have in hopes that the Lord will respond with healing for all of them. All while the administration is supplying doughnuts and coffee and bean dip to their workforce... for this I am intrigued. The people here are sold, they are helpless and will not accept anything I mention regarding to nutrition and fitness. Everyone I talked to hasn't let me finish my sentence about my fitness regimen. They break off to sharing their participation with conventional wisdom.

Great Ideas

Found this from a friend and it inspired me. Recently, more and more people have been joining my Performance Nutrition Experience FB Page. There are people from out of state on the page! The results have been unbelievable, everyone is looking great and feeling great. This is helping spread the word about the PNE. It all started with ideas. How to keep people motivated throughout a nutrition challenge. More importantly, I wanted to change peoples lives. I wanted to change their perception about food. I believe I have for some. The Performance Nutrition Experience has become POWERFUL. The stories that people are telling me are amazing. I'm talking about such amazing stories that they deserve to be shared in articles and newspapers, etc. This is exactly what I wanted. I can't wait to read those essays and share the before and after pictures. THIS IS JUT THE BEGINNING.

As for myself:

I am doing really well, in fact, I don't think I have changed anything since the Whole30. I know I have lost weight, but I still have not taken any measurements yet, nor do I feel any need to. I am not concerned about weight loss, I am happy to say that I am feeling performance. I am becoming much more functional and my work capacity is improving every week. My strengths have not gone down and I feel better than ever throughout the day. I know I don't share much of my nutrition, I am just forgetful to share or I can't find the time to. But I want to share now what my nutrition looks like:

I eat a lot of vegetables: Raw Vegetables

Spinach, bell Peppers, asparagus and tomatoes. I eat them organic (80% of the time) and I eat them raw. Meaning I don't have to cook them or steam them to enjoy. I actually prefer to eat vegetables like this. Some days I don't eat as much but usually I try to consume up to 2lbs of veggies a day. I really enjoy spinach and bell peppers!

Post workout nutrition is my most important meal of the day.

Almost immediately after my workout, I eat. Primary source of protein is grass fed beef or two hard boiled free range eggs. I eat veggies, I will consume 1/4 of a sweet potato and I will enjoy Coconut Water. Sources of fat will either be some almonds, avocado or coconut. Sometimes I am running low and I will try a Mix 1 protein shake. After a good conversation with a representative from the company, I believe that if you want to put something in your body and the only convenient thing you can get is a protein shake, I will most definately use Mix 1. Look at the comparison chart in the lobby!

High Dose Fish Oil Diet

I consume a minimum of 8 grams a day of liquid fish oil per day. That is 8 grams of EPA/DHA. Usually first thing when I get to the gym I take 15ml (4 grams = half a shot glass) and another 4 grams after a workout, if it is a rest day, I will take the 4 grams during the 5 or 6:00 p.m. session. Fish oil is the key to my success. It is a big reason why my fat loss is accelerating, my body recovers very well and it controls a lot of inflammation throughout my body. I feel amazing throughout the day when taking fish oil. It is costly for me monthly but well worth every penny!

I wish I consumed more grassfed meat

My eggs are organic, and a lot of chicken I eat is organic. I occasionally purchase grass fed beef but sometimes I can not afford it. I will try to eat as lean as I can otherwise.

All I drink is Water and Coconut Water, I drink plenty of water.  I can't think of me drinking anything else.(occasional mix 1)

Fruit = Almost None

Fruit is important, but I think people are still consuming way too much of it: I have now learned this. The last two weeks I don't think I even ate a single piece of fruit. Earlier I had fruit before I lifted heavy. But I think it was just an excuse to consume sugar. I am cautious with the amount of sugar that goes in my body. Sugar is sugar, it is only acceptable to have natrual sugars after a workout. Other than that, very minimal. Always go for berries when consuming fruit.

Heavy Days

Sweet Potato, (I used to also eat fruit). More veggies, tons of veggies (especially carrots) and Coconut Water before a WOD that consist of heavy lifting. I find myelf eating more duirng these days than any other day.

Met Con Days

During Days that I know that we will be doing tons of cardio, I will fast up to 6 hours before working out. I have noticed that I perform a lot better with an exmpty stomach. In fact, I feel like a machine!

Regular Training Days,

I usually workout early or around noon. My breakfast is pretty decent.

I eat a lot of fat
